DIY veggie wash is a great way to save money. All of the ingredients are pretty much pantry staples, and it takes less than a minute to put it together. If your budget doesn’t permit you to always buy organic produce, like mine, here is a great option. I try to buy my produce at U-picks and at the farmers market when they are open, but right now in the dead of winter in Utah my options are limited.
Veggie Wash
1 cup water
1 cup vinegar
2 T baking soda
2 T lemon juice
Mix ingredients in a large bowl. Some fizzing will occur. Pour into a
clean spray bottle. Use this mixture by spraying your produce and
allow them to sit for five minutes before rinsing well.

Thanks for your recipe. I have used vinegar and water in the past. I will have to try the lemon juice and baking soda. thanks
Give it a go! How are you doing. I just love what you do on your blog by the way.

I put a link to your sight for the veggie wash. Thanks!
Thanks Chirine. How is your blog going? You do such a good job of keeping it up, and have ALOT of great information and recipes on whole grains.
You said you buy your produce at U-Picks. Where is that?
U-pick is the greatest! It is a website that lists a bunch of different farms that have signed up to let people pick off of their farms. You go and pick whatever produce they have and then you pay per pound. You save a ton of money and the produce is as fresh as picking it from your own garden.
When using your wash, do you recommend only washing the things you’re about to eat? Or can you wash them and put them back in the fridge? I’m just wondering if I could prewash things like apples, pears, etc for things my kids snack on.
Thank you!
How long would this wash be good for? This seems like it could wash a LOT of produce but if it’s only a use once then toss type of deal I don’t think it would be that economical.
Just found your site, and I love it! I’m wondering why a mix like this is any better than plain water. Thoughts on that? Thanks!
Do I need to keep this in the fridge or just in the cupboard? I would also like to know how long it keeps? Thanks
