Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead

Have you seen the movie “Fat, Sick, and Nearly, Dead”?  It is an incredibly inspirational story.  If you haven’t seen it download it on Amazon or I think Netflix has it.  This movie hit home as we watched it with my in-laws.  My father and mother in law have both had heart attacks in the last two years.  My father in laws heart attack was very scary.  He actually had numerous heart attacks and one while Scotty and I were talking to him in the waiting room to go in to surgery.  He flat lined twice.  When he got into surgery they had to do 5 by-passes.  When the Dr. Mitchel went to sew him back up his heart was so swollen that he couldn’t close his chest. After a long eight and half hours  Dr.  Mitchel came out to the waiting room where we were all waiting to hear how he was doing.   The look on his face was an immediate indicator something was wrong.  He told us that he couldn’t sew him up and that he was going to have to leave him open until the swelling went down.  In his whole career he had only done this one other time.  I don’t know the outcome of the other time but judging by the look on his face it wasn’t good.  Everyone sobbed and prayed and waited.  They had to put him under a coma so that he they could leave his chest open.  He was that way for nearly a week.  An incredibly scary time for the whole family.   By the grace of God, it was a complete miracle he lived through it all and is alive today.  That was a year and a half ago.  Today he is doing better than before but there is still room for improvement.  He is off of soda completely, but going out to eat is still so convenient.  He has put a lot of weight back on that he previously lost and the heart surgeon has told him he needs to do something about it.

As the show ended we all were left with a desire to do something.  I committed J.B. my father in law to doing the cleanse for ten days with us.  I am going to make  all of the green smoothies or juice and we will do the cleanse for 10 days.  My mother in law is on board as well and Scotty too.  We are giving his whole family the movie to see who will join us.  With a family history of having heart attacks it would be really beneficial for the whole family to get jump started in eating better and giving up soda.

I am going to document the journey here.  We are starting Monday, March .  If you watch Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and want to join us in a cleanse for ten days starting March 5th 2012.  Please comment below.  I would love to have a whole community do it with us.  There is great strength and support in numbers.  I don’t believe that a 10 day cleanse is the cure all.  What I do believe is that it can be a catalyst for change.  Clearing out the cravings and replacing them with cravings for live foods, fruits and vegetables.  It also can lead to significant weight loss, you will see in the show.  That is only sustainable if you follow it with a good diet and exercise after, but it can be just the jump start that someone needs to make lasting changes.

I believe that people can heal themselves through diet.  The body is miraculous and incredible at repairing damage done.  You will see in the movie that he  gets off ALL of his prescription drugs.  J.B. looked at me after the movie and said,”diabetes is hell”. Then pointing to his insulin he said, “I have to live with this thing everyday”.  I believe him, it would be hell to lose your feeling in your feet, or to lose most of your teeth like my Grandpa, or to have to calculate everything you eat.  Eating a plant based diet sounds to simple to take that away, but they have shown countless stories of people that have healed through diet alone.  I know that is a bold statement but the more I see things and research I truly believe it.

Join me in our Reboot Your System Cleanse, on march and feel the powerful effects of food to heal and energize.  I am going to post my shopping list, what we are making, and other details.  Join us and experience your own powerful results.  Warning as you will see in the show this might not be easy or convenient but nothing worthwhile rarely is.  You might go through detox symptoms in the beginning.  Stick with it to feel the benefits after.  You might call me crazy, but eating packs of Cheetos and super sized Big Gulps in my opinion is far crazier.  You will get more nutrients in the 10 days drinking smoothies or juice, we are deciding which one we will do, than eating what most of the Standard American Diet looks like.

Post a comment below if you are going to do the cleanse with us and if you have a blog write about it and put a link back here so we can support you too!

I would love to join the 10 day reboot….I am already called the health nut of the family. My mom and dad visited us the other day and she commented “I never know what I will find in your fridge or your cupboards to eat, it’s always an adventure”..So far she has not turned anything down. Most recent recipe was making alfredo sauce out of cashews and some other ingredients, noodles were shredded zuccinis…..Love your site….

    • desiree says:

Haha, I hear you. That sounds so good, I would love your recipe for the alfredo sauce. Glad that you are going to be a part of it.

I saw the movie and it was amazing how food can heal. I am not a fan of only eating plant based food but we all need cleanses to give our digestion tract a break. It’s the only way to fully restore and deliver nutrients to our bodies. I’m in.

  14. Rebekah says:

I just watched that movie just one week ago on Netflix! Amazing movie and very motivating! I am in for doing the 10 day detox. I am a HUGE believer in whole raw foods…I joined in on the greensmoothiegirl.com website and started the 12 steps to whole foods beginning with drinking a quart of green smoothie every day and after 1 month I finally got pregnant after 4 years of trying! My husband has joined with me and this new life change has been one of the best changes we’ve ever made for our health and wellness!

  15. Annie says:

  16. Melissa says:

I found you on visible voice. Your story was very touching. Thank you. I’m in. I’m going for the 60 day because I so much need the mindset change and 10 days just doesn’t feel like it’s enough to change my perspective and truly get rid of my unhealthy habits.
