My Favorite Things 2014

My Favorite Things 2014

I got a few emails asking about different kitchen tools I love.  I thought I would do a round up of my favorite things in 2014 for ya.

Food Processor

14 Cup Food Processor

Ok I spent a lot of time back and forth if I needed a food processor AND a blender. Couldn’t the Blendtec do all the same things.  Turns out the answer is NO.  I LOVE my blender but the food processor does somethings better.  I use it to make salsa, bars, banana ice cream, nut butters, shred kale for salads, shred cheese, chop onions in bulk, chop peppers in bulk, to make hummus, pesto, and the list goes on.  Basically it is good for anything you don’t want pulverized.

Blendtec Wildside

Blendtec Total Blender Wildside Jar

If you know me, you know I LOVE this little kitchen appliance.  I know it is SPENDY.  I get it.  It took me awhile to pull the trigger and buy this blender, but I have not regretted it for one second since.  I have a refurbished blender and it works like a champ, it also has a warranty.  You can save some money that way.  You will not regret buying this blender, I promise!

Bosch Kitchen Mixer

Bosch Universal Plus Kitchen Machine

This thing is a work horse.  Bosch’s last FOREVER.  I actually don’t have this exact Bosch.  I have the compact mini, but I REALLY want to upgrade to this one.  We have outgrown the mini.  I got it when I was newly married and now that we have three little tornadoes I need something bigger.  I make all my cookies, whip cream, bars, breads, pizza doughs—basically anything you have to bake in this bad boy.  They are pricey but you will save a TON of money buy making your own cookies, bread, etc.   Not too mention you can use better ingredients and cut out all the preservatives and other things that are added to store bought baked goods.

Confession I am actually a horrible bread maker-but it is on my bucket list to learn how come 2015.  I have a cute neighbor that bakes whole wheat bread and sells it. I buy it from her.

Biochem Whey Protein

Biochem Protein Powder

Being pregnant I was always looking for more ways to get protein in.  This protein powder tastes like a dream.  It comes from grass fed cows, and the ingredients are recognizable.  That isn’t true for all protein powders.  My favorite smoothie with this is frozen berries, spinach, coconut water, and of course this protein powder.  I make it with only a tiny bit of coconut water and make into ice cream and top it with granola or shredded coconut for a treat.

Vega Protein Powder

Vega Vanilla Protein

My good friend gifted me some of this protein powder and I LOVE it.  It is the only vegan protein powder that I have tried that doesn’t have a chalky texture to it.  If you want an amazing treat try frozen peaches, this protein powder, and coconut water…….it is THE best treat and it is good for you too.

Kinvara Running Shoes

Kinvara 5 Running Shoe

It’s hard to find a cute running shoe that also is functional.  I LOVE light running shoes and after switching to a lighter shoe I will never go back.  I loved these shoes so much I bought them in pink and yellow.  They feel like air.  I can’t wait to train for something in them…maybe a half Ironman or trail race….I haven’t decided.

gap shirtgap right size

Gap Fit Breath Strip Pull Over

This is THE best running shirt.   It has a hood and a front pocket–enough said.  You need this in your life :).  I bought this with a 40% off code.  Watch for a deal during Christmas I am sure they are having something.  Or you can download poach it.  It’s an app  that tracks your favorite things and scours the internet then emails you when it has gone down in price.  Right now there are SO many sales it is worth trying out.

kind bar

Kind Caramel Sea Salt Bar

Oh my goodness you have to try these bars.  They only have 5 grams of sugar and they taste like candy.  I love these a little too much and would have to limit myself-they are kind of pricey.  My kids love them too, but they are kind of pricey so I would make them split one.

Clear Glass Stackable Bowls

Stackable Glass Bowls

It’s nice to have a set of mixing bowls that are glass.  They feel cleaner to me, and they don’t take up a lot of space in your kitchen because they stack.  I also love the smaller bowls for prep or to put on the table with toppings.  If you want to get your kids in the kitchen prep the recipe beforehand in these bowls and then let them dump.  I don’t usually do that because it would take previous planning-I am not a great planner and so I usually just have them jump in with what I am making-but it would be A LOT less messy if I did it that way.

West Elm Bowls

West Elm Bowls

Oh these bowls!!! Every time I eat out of these bowls it puts a smile on my face.  In fact I simplified my kitchen and got rid of all other bowls and these are the only ones I own, except for one random bowl that is a bit bigger for salads.  I LOVE the fun patterns and colors it makes anything you eat taste better-trust me on this one.

Hands Free Mama book cover

Hands Free Mama

This book is such a good reminder of what really matters.  Rachel is very open and honest about how she used to live a distracted life as a mother.  With SO many good things grabbing for our attention and time it is easy to leave little time for THE very best things in life.  This would make a great gift for any mama that you know.

Kiwi Crate

Kiwi Crate

This is SO nice to have delivered every month.  I have tried a few craft boxes and I really like this one.  They have different options depending on the ages of your kids.  My little boy colors the book that comes with each box for hours, it keeps both of them entertained for at least one afternoon if not two.  My little girl moves through it a little quicker.  With a new born this last box that has come has been a LIFE SAVER.  I am all for having someone do the work for me of rounding up all the supplies for crafts.  Plus I found when I do it on my own I spend a lot because I have to get a whole pack of pipe cleaners or whatever supply for just a little bit.  These little boxes are awesome for staying sane and not sticking your kid in front of the t.v.

Great list, thank you for this! I think those West Elm bowls are my favorite, I will have to throw some hints my husband’s way.

Hey friend! Signed up for the kiwi crates! I’ve been wanting to do that but it was a little pricey to ship to Canada but with the sale totally worth it now. ALSO….my cousin has a really yummy recipe for whole wheat/grain bread (she mixes it up a bit) that makes 8 loaves with her bosch. I think she told me she actually mixes it the night before and lets it rise in the fridge overnight and then bakes them all in the morning. If you want the recipe email me (in case my pregnant brain forgets to check back here). xoxox

Kristi! How are you prego mama???Your going to love kiwi crates to keep your boys entertained! Yes please I would love the recipe. My downfall is letting it rise long enough I’m impatient. But if it was going over night that would be perfect!!!

  3. Angela Bergeron says:

Do the kiwi crates have enough for 2? It says yes and sometimes no on their site, so it’s confusing. I homeschool so I have a lot of art supplies around already, but I’m not crafty and I don’t like finding projects to do and organizing them. So I was looking into kiwi crate, but it’s really only worth the money each month if it’s enough for 2.

    • Desi says:

Hi Angela! No I added on a second child to the crate. It is discounted for the second child. I wouldn’t try to share the crate though because they each get their little activity book and they get to make thier own craft.

Hi. Love your blog. Great info on the kitchen helpers. I have been playing with being healthier in our food choices, but now that my daughter has been diagnosed with Ciliac Disease, I am changing careers so that I can make more items for her that are healthy and delicious. Thanks for all you do.

    • Desi says:

Hi lisa! Thanks for your sweet words. Oh that is hard! But your whole family will eat healthier because of it. Sometimes things come as a blessing in disguise.

  5. Rachelle Heywood says:

I’ve been trying to decide for some time now if I should get a food processor or just get the food processor attachment for my bosch. What do you think? Is one better than the other? I’d be using it for all the things you listed above with your food processor. Thanks for any help you can give.

    • Desi says:

Oh Rachelle that is a good question! I have the mini Bosche. I WANT the big bosche because we have outgrown the mini. But I don’t have the food processor attachment. If it works just as good I would just get the attachment to save kitchen space. The problem is I have NO idea how good it works. I imagine it works well because the Bosche is a power house.
