How To Fix A Broken Diet

I bet you didn’t think I was going to say that.  If you are a mom, you know how precious sleep is and what happens if you don’t get enough of it.  We talk a lot about diet here on the blog and how it affects your health.  But sleep is just as important, and I would argue even more important.

Why?  Because when you are sleep deprived, you crave sugary foods.  In fact…

Research has shown those who sleep less are more likely to gain weight.  Why?  Because lack of sleep causes stress within the body.  As we have talked about, stress increases the production of cortisol.  This hormone does a number on your body! When you are tired and your cortisol levels are up, your body craves sugary comfort foods to give you a boost of “energy.”  In fact, sleep deprived people eat 15% more sugary foods on average.  Sugar might give you quick spurts of energy, but the body knows the difference between that and sleep.

What Happens When You Have Excess Cortisol:

  • Increased appetite for processed/high sugar foods
  • Body stores more fat in abdominal area
  • Cortisol breaks down muscle tissue = lower metabolism
  • Weight gain

Okay, so how do you get more sleep?  Here are my 7 tips:

Okay, this one is not going to happen. We love them too much to do that!  So, I will move onto tip number 2. 🙂

2. Decrease Your Exposure to MFA’s. What?

MFA’s are what our cell phones, computers, and other electronic devices omit.  Basically, they are frequency signals. These signals can disrupt your sleep.  An easy fix is to turn off the wireless router in your home right before you go to bed.  Put your cell phone and other wireless devices on air plane mode, or move them to another room before bed time to decrease the MFAs in your bed room.  If your phone is on airplane mode just don’t forget to take it off-like I have!

3. The Most Restful Sleep Happens Between 10-2 p.m.

Bummer, I know.  If you are like me night time is QUIET, and I can get a lot done.  Or, you might have older kids who are up late.  But the fact of the matter is that your body produces a cascade of integral hormones during these hours, which results in the best rest for you body. Things like DNA repair and free radical removal both happen during this very important period. Try to get to bed early to reap the benefits of sleeping during this time!

4. Listen to a Meditation CD

If you haven’t done this, do it now!  I listened to a hypno birthing CD while I was pregnant almost every night.  Although it was a bit cheesy, I slept like a dream!  Even my husband slept noticeably better.  Historically, my most restless nights have been when I was pregnant, and even worse, when I had to take steroids for a complication in my last pregnancy.  Those meditation CD’s were a life saver.  There are great resources out there if you aren’t pregnant, including The Mindful Awareness Research Center, and there are some wonderful meditation play lists on Spotify as well.

I have tried out several meditation resources specifically for children, and haven’t found a good one yet.  If you know of one, please let me know!

5. Get Enough Magnesium in Your Diet

Magnesium is called “The Miracle Mineral” because it relaxes achy muscles and the brain. The Medical Center at the University of Maryland did a study, which concluded that magnesium deficiency is related to agitation and anxiety, restless leg syndrome (RLS), sleep disorders, irritability, muscle spasms and weakness, insomnia, and poor nail growth, just to name a few.
